Spelling

In Key Stage 2, we use Read Write Inc. (RWI) Spelling as a structured and engaging approach to teaching spelling. Spelling is taught daily and is carefully organised into five short sessions, ensuring regular practice and clear progression. The aim of RWI Spelling is to develop automaticity, so that spelling becomes fluent and secure. When children no longer need to pause and think about how to spell words, their minds are freed to focus on the creativity, content and impact of their writing.
RWI Spelling brings together the four key areas of spelling: phonology (sounds), orthography (spelling patterns), morphology (how words are built) and etymology (word origins). Lessons provide a rich balance of independent, partnered and group activities, allowing children to practise, discuss and apply spelling strategies in a purposeful way. Through this approach, children build confidence, deepen their understanding of language and develop the skills needed to become accurate, creative and expressive writers.
